“Oz” Opens Strong

March 10, 2013 By Mike Hickerson 1 Comment

Oz, the Great and Powerful cast a spell over the box-office this weekend, opening with $80.2 million.  It was the highest grossing opening for a movie in 2013.

Second place went to Jack the Giant Slayer, which says receipts fall off 63 percent to an estimated $10.02 million.

The comedy Identity Thief continued its run with third place, taking in $6.3 million and pushing the film to over $100 million in ticket sales.

Rounding out the top five were Dead Man Down with $5.3 million in fourth and Snitch with $5.1 million.

The reviews had been so mixed that I had been at first afraid to go see it…went anyway and wound up loving it. As far as an upgraded sequel to the classic I think it was just fine. Came away feeling sorry for Theodora though…she really didn’t deserve what happened to her…too bad we already know what happens to her in the future…I would have loved to see a redemption arc for her in future sequels.
