Director Renny Harlin has been tapped to bring Hercules back to the big-screen in 3-D.
The big-budget retelling about the Greek demi-god will be produced by Millennium. The studio has budgeted $70 million for the epic and is eager to get filming started. Reports indicate that filming could begin as early as May and that the movie could hit theaters in March of 2014.
What’s the rush, you ask? It could be a rival project about Hercules being developed by Paramount and MGM with Brett Ratner attached to direct. That film is set to open next summer.
Millennium has been developing its Hercules project since 2007, and the script, written by Sean Hoodand Hanna Weg, tells a revisionist tale of the classic Greek myth.
“It’s not a comic book, cartoony fantasy thing,” Harlin tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s closer toGladiator than flying horses,”
On the subject of the competing Hercules project, Harlin says, “I think these are very different kinds of movies in their approach to this legendary character. Obviously Hercules has been portrayed in many different films, such as the Disney animated movie. I wish them luck. Ancient Greek mythology is an endless source of good stories. … Let’s see both movies be successful.”
