Expectant parents could soon have something besides an ultrasound print-out to show friends and family if a new technology from Japan catches on.
A clinic in Tokyo has created 3-D models of unborn children.
The model is created using BioTexture, which turns the image data into 3D data, which is then brought to life using a 3D printer that uses two resins to create the model. One is clear, for the mother’s body, and the other is opaque, which is the shape of the baby. Usually, the technology is used to make models of people, specifically in order to show bone structure and organs for medical students.
According to reports, the modeling works best in the eighth and ninth month of the pregnancy and the models can give parents a fairly accurate idea of what the child’s face will look like.
And the cost for this? $1250, not including the imaging fees.
