NBC is jumping into the vampire craze with a new series based Bram Stoker’s original vampire, Dracula.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, NBC has given the green light to a 10 episode drama series starring The Tudors’ Jonathan Rhys Meyers in the lead role.
The series, which bypassed the traditional pilot stage, takes place in the 1890s and finds Dracula living a double life in London as an American businessman interested in bringing modern science to Victorian society. The new series was announced by NBC head Robert Greenblatt at the Television Critics Association meetings yesterday.
“In the world of Twilight and True Blood and all the contemporized stories, we thought we’d go back to the original,” he told reporters Tuesday at TCA, noting that the series would stay true to the time period but look toward the future.

I was just talking with my wife last night about the lack of period pieces on American television. There were a few this last season but our success rate isn’t anywhere near like it is in the U.K.
But for the love of all things that go bump in the night, this is Dracula. Don’t screw this up NBC. Seriously, if there’s one vampire show you want to get right, this is it.
