Berg Diagnoses “Battleship”

Berg Diagnoses “Battleship”

June 12, 2012 By Mike Hickerson 6 Comments

While it’s done well world-wide, Battleship has sunk at the U.S. box office.

And director Peter Berg tells The Huffington Post that the failure of the film gives him the opportunity to reflect on what went wrong with the film.

“I have a movie in theaters right now which has obviously underperformed in many ways. When [a movie] doesn’t work, it’s an … interesting opportunity to look at what went wrong and how it went wrong,” he says.

Berg asserts the concept and the budget for the film were “too big.”

“It was a movie that I tried as hard as I could to get inside of. But the concept is so big and powerful, and the money is so big and so powerful, that the movie is going to run away with itself,” Berg says.

Do you agree with Berg? Or do you think there are other reasons Battleship was a miss?

He’s off. The entire concept is lame. Basing a movie on the game like that? Who even cares?

“The concept is so big & powerful” REALLY? You had a hard time trying to get inside of the concept of a film based on a freaking board game??? No wonder Hollywood is out of original ideas with complete inept morons like this directing movies these days. What’s next? Maybe this idiot will direct a “Checkers” movie & spend millions of dollars & weeks of wasted time trying to grasp the concept of how one side could have so many kings on the board when you can only have one in his planned sequel, “Chess”. I have a migraine now.

I don’t even see how this was even loosely based on the game, except for the lame part when they were using the sea probes to track the alien ship. It was okay overall, but I think it would have been a better idea to have the battle ship along with the fleet on exercises, that would have given a excuse for it to be fueled up and armed. I doubt very much that there are any live powder bags still on the old Mighty Mo’, let alone shells and .50 cal rounds. I’m also pretty sure it takes a loooooooong time to get those old boilers to make enough steam to move that big ship!

Honestly, I went expecting nothing more than big explosions. I was surprised at just how good and well crafted a film it was. It was fun, the characters likeable, action good and a plot only a few small holes in it. Was a little bit of a throwback tone to the military propaganda films of the 50’s and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I think people didn’t expect much from it and didn’t give it a chance. With so many other forms of entertainment competing I think people just don’t wanna fork over the money to see something in the theater anymore unless there is alot of positive hype about something.

    Concept so big and powerful?

Let’s see, two opposing forces trying to bomb the other out of existence. Yeah, big. Powerful. Board game did it better.

American Warships from SyFy was a much better Bang for the Buck.
