After a decade away, audiences were apparently eager for another encounter with the Men in Black.
Men in Black 3 took in $70 million over the Memorial Day weekend and debuted at the top of the box office. The re-teaming of Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith knocked the teaming of Marvel’s mightiest heroes into second place.
The Avengers took in $46.9 million over the holiday. The movie has collected $523.6 million since its May 4 release.
Battleship took third place with $13.8 million, followed by the comedy The Dictator with $11.8 million. The Johnny Depp comedy Dark Shadows was fifth with $9.4 million.
The only other major newcomer, the horror film Chernobyl Diaries, didn’t shake much up at the cineplex, mustering sixth place with $9.3 million.

Wait a minute, $523 Million, wasn’t it $1 Billion just last week.
Gazerbeam says
That’s probably a “US total” vs “International total” issue. As you know, we Americans don’t really care about the rest of the world. (See: most US Media calling Battleship a flop, even though it’s made a bunch of money overseas)
