“Alf” Creator Wants a Reboot

“Alf” Creator Wants a Reboot

May 23, 2012 By Mike Hickerson 4 Comments

If you grew up in the 80’s, you probably remember the unexpected hit series ALF.

The series focused on a sarcastic alien who lived in the garage of a seemingly normal all-American family.  The show was a hit for NBC back in the day and now the creator and producer, Paul Fusco says he think it’s time for a reboot.

Fusco tells  The Hollywood Reporter, that he never got to push the show as dark as he’d like to in its original run and that if he could bring it back, he would go into some of  those unexplored areas.

“If you remember, toward the first season and second season, ALF used to drink, he was a party animal. He drank beer and everything, and once the kids and families started watching it, they said ‘ALF’s not really a great role model if he’s drinking beer, maybe you should pull that back a little bit,'” Fusco says. “ALFcould be more outspoken now than ever, because the world is a whole different place than the ’80s. And I think the character still stands up and certainly has more to say now than ever.”

And in the world of reboots, Fusco says now is the ideal time for more ALF.

“I think the timing is right. That’s a big important thing, timing,” he said, noting he’s currently in the process of pitching film studios. “There have been movies out there of characters that I didn’t think were on the same parallel as ALF that got movies made, so I think it’s time. I think it could be a home run on a lot of levels.”

Ugh. This new low really convinces me we should see the death of “reboots”. Start giving opportunities to writers who’ve come up with creative *new* ideas, or can adapt excellent existing fiction into movies or television.

Child: “Grandpa, come see this great new show. It’s called Mork and Mindy.”
Grandfather: “Which version is that son, the original from 1978, the reboot from 2013, the reboot from 2039, or the reboot from 2061”?
