Doohan’s Ashes Launched Into Space

Doohan’s Ashes Launched Into Space

May 22, 2012 By Mike Hickerson 1 Comment

Seven years after his death, actor James Doohan’s wish for his remains to be launched into space is being honored.

With SpaceX’s launch this morning, Doohan’s cremated ashes, along with those of about 300 other space enthusiasts, are headed to the International Space Station.

It cost approximately $3,000 per family to have the ashes included on the flight.

In addition to Doohan, the capsule also includes the remains of late Mercury astronaut Gordon Cooper, who died in 2004. Doohan passed away in 2005 of pneumonia and Alzheimer’s disease.

I just happened to be up that night and went outside just as it was launching so I got to see it go up. I knew his remains were onboard and all I could think of was “Beaming Up”.

It was a nice Candle light. Not as bright as a Shuttle Launch at night but still plainly visible from my home. I would compare it to the different between a blow torch(Shuttle) and a Candle(SpaceX)
