While it’s been a solid performer overseas, the US opening of Battleship sank over the weekend, overpowered by the might of Earth’s mightiest heroes.
In its third week, The Avengers took in another $55 million at the box office and is now the sixth largest grossing film of all time. The super hero drama also has a larger seventeen-day box office total than The Dark Knight.
Meanwhile, Battleship could only muster up $25.3 million in its U.S. debut. For leading man Taylor Kitsch, that’s the second high profile release of the year that’s under-performed at the box-office. (He was the star of John Carter).
Third place went to The Dictator which opened on Wednesday of last week. The film took in $17.4 million over the weekend and has made $24 million since it’s release.
Fourth place went to Dark Shadows with $12.7 million and What To Expect When You’re Expecting rounded out the top five with $10.5 million.
