“Maleficent” Gets Release Date

Disney’s upcoming Sleeping Beauty retelling, Maleficent will attempt to bewitch audience starting on March 14, 2014.

The fairy tale retelling stars Angelina Jolie in the lead role as Angelina Jolie.

According to the studio, “the live-action film explores the origins of the evil fairy Maleficent and what led her to curse Princess Aurora in Disney’s animated classic Sleeping Beauty.”

Disney has had solid success with retold fairy tales opening in March. Last year, Alice in Wonderland was a solid hit for the studio during the same time period.

The film will face some interesting competition for the March 14 opening date. DreamWorks Animation’s Mr. Peabody and Sherman, based on the animated characters and the sci-fi thriller Invertigo also open that day. That is, of course, assuming that one of the three studios doesn’t decide to move the release date with Disney’s fairy tale landing that day.
