Universal Pictures is looking for some franchise help to get the studio back on track.
Talking to the Hollywood Reporter, Universal head Ron Meyer says he’d like to see Snow White and the Huntsman do well enough at the box-office to warrant a sequel. Meyer says that while the film itself doesn’t necessarily lend itself to a sequel, he can see ways in which the franchise could continue centered around the Huntsman, played by Chris Hemsworth.
In addition, Meyer says he thinks the studio should take a crack at a new version of Dr. Suess’ The Cat in the Hat. This time, instead of Mike Meyers in cat make-up, Meyer says he’d like to see the studio produce a new animated version of the classic story. Part of the interest in new Suess material comes from the recent box-office success of The Lorax.
You may recall that Meyer recently called a lot of Universal’s recent output “s***” and you may be thinking that this is just more of the same. However, there may be a glimmer of hope in the interview.
When asked about 3-D, Meyer admitted he doesn’t think it’s the be-all, end-all solution to Hollywood’s box-office woes.
“I’m not a fan of 3D as an audience member,” he said. “I’m too old for it. I don’t like wearing the glasses over my glasses.”
However, he won’t rule it out completely. “There is a place for it, an important place. I just don’t think we should kid ourselves that it is an end-all for the business.”
