While Galaxy Quest was a family-friendly send-up of the genre, actress Sigorney Weaver says there was a racier cut of the film with more sex and swearing.
John Carter producer Lindsey Collins tells Collider that during a recent lunch conversation, Weaver spilled the beans on the alternate cut.
“We had lunch with Sigourney [Weaver] who was telling us that there actually used to be an R-rated version of that movie which was awesome. It was the director’s cut and it was R-rated and everybody was swearing and there were sex scenes, and the whole thing,” Collins said. “They didn’t know what to do with it, so they had to re-edit the whole thing and made it what it is today. We were like, ‘How do we get our hands on the R-rated version ofGalaxy Quest?’ She said ‘I don’t know!’ and we were like, ‘Come on, Sigourney!'”
So, would you like to see an R-rated version of the film or are you happy with the version we have?

Why mess with a classic? I Love Galaxy Quest as is!

This is not actually news to me. There is one scene that clinches it in the original theatrical release. Just before the stroll through the Chompers, Gwen DeMarco says “Well, screw this!” which was overdubbed on top of what was actually said. From a bit of lip reading, a certain versatile curse word beginning with the letter “f” got replaced. This is the largest clue that another cut of the film existed. Sigorney’s reported statement only confirms my original suspicion.
And… I would pay to see the “R” rated cut.

And I think early on, when the cast are fighting amongst themselves, there’s a moment when Daryl Mitchell yells “You full of IT,” and the lips clearly indicate he had an extra SH at the front. Plus weren’t there also several references to Tony Shaloub’s character being high at various points?

Ok so there is another version of one Shakespeare works would scholars and theater goers want to see it performed, nah I like the original, what are you all brain dead. To see a version that speaks to the true sauciness of SOS is too good to pass up if the movie studio hasn’t destroyed it.

Don’t let Lucas get his hands on it.

I love the version we have as the gold standard of genre send-ups, but I wouldn’t mind seeing the R-rated Director’s Cut & have it as part of my video library.

Bring it on!
