After a couple of weeks of damage control, the creators of John Carter were hoping for the best. But based on the projected budget for the film, it could be the first box office flop of the year as the film opened to just over $30 million and behind last week’s top earner, The Lorax. The animated version of the Dr. Suess book earned $39.1 million in its second weekend and has taken in $121 in its first two weeks of release.
In third was Project X with $11.5 million. Fourth place went to the newly opened Silent House with just over $7 million.
Rounding out the top five was Act of Valor.
That’s too bad. John Carter was an awesome movie.
