Man Sues AMC Over Snack Prices

Man Sues AMC Over Snack Prices

March 7, 2012 By Mike Hickerson 4 Comments

We’ve all lamented the high price of going to the movies–not just the tickets but the concessions.

Now one movie fan is trying to do something about it.  The Detroit Free Press reports that Joshua Thompson has filed a class action law suit in Wayne County Circuit Court against his local AMC theater in hopes of forcing theaters statewide to dial down snack prices.

“He got tired of being taken advantage of,” said Thompson’s lawyer, Kerry Morgan of Wyandotte. “It’s hard to justify prices that are three- and four-times higher than anywhere else.”

American Multi Cinema, which operate the AMCs in the area, wouldn’t comment on the lawsuit.

“It’s a loser,” said Gary Victor, an Eastern Michigan University business law professor. He said state Supreme Court decisions in 1999 and 2007 exempted most regulated businesses from the Michigan Consumer Protection Act.

There’s an easy enough fix to this problem without a lawsuit. Stop giving them money! If it were that intolerable, people would stop going, which would force them to drop the prices or go out of business. Simple.

We have enough youth. What we need is a Fountain of Smarts.

(Is there any way we can, assuming he hasn’t already done so, prevent him from reproducing? No? Darn.)

So…let me get this straight…this guy was FORCED to buy snacks at the movies?
The next sound you hear will be the sound of this guy’s ass when it hits the sidewalk after being thrown out of court for this frivolity.

I’ll never understand why people bitch about the price of food at a movie theatre, as if someone said you HAVE to buy food there.
When I go to the flicks, I take a small bottle of water and a cookie. Period.
I don’t HAVE to have popcorn, NEED a hot dog or REQUIRE any of the candy they sell. And who the frell needs a candy bar *that* big? Really?!

That having been said, I understand how theatres make most of their money on the concessions. People need to stop thinking that the movie theatres make their money on ticket sales, and they need to know that running a movie theatre ain’t cheap.
