Universal Studios and Redbox have agreed to extend their current contract to rent DVDs and Blu-Rays. The good news for consumers is the two sides have decided not to extend the rental window for new releases beyond the current 28-day wait.
Warner Brothers wants Redbox to extend the rental window to 56 days.
The agreement extends the relationship between Redbox and Universal Studios Home Entertainment through August 2014.
Meanwhile, negotiations between Redbox and Warner Brothers appear to have stalled over the 56 day rental window.
Speaking at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom conference mostly to promote UltraViolet as the next revolutionary thing, WB home entertainment president Kevin Tsujihara said negotiations are ongoing with Redbox.
Redbox, though, did not respond Wednesday when asked if it is engaging in negotiations with WB and, in fact, three weeks ago it was touting a non-agreement with WB as though it were beneficial to Redbox’s cut-rate kiosk business.
Netflix has agreed to the 56 day rental window with WB.
