Space: 1999 is prepping for another launch.
Set a hundred years after the original, the new Space: 2099 is heralded as a re-imagining of the original series. ITV Studios America and HDFILMS are collaborating on the new version.
“Science fiction is a powerful format capable of visualizing the human condition in thought-provoking ways,” said HDFilms president Jace Hall, who will spearhead the effort and serve as an executive producer. The project is in the development phase and has yet to be shopped to networks.
“While we are indeed re-imagining the franchise and bringing something new and relevant to today’s audiences,” continued Hall, who recently revived V at ABC, “I feel strongly that some of the overall tones set by the original Space: 1999 television show represent an exciting platform to explore possibilities.”
Added ITV Studios International’s managing director Paul Buccieri: “After more than 35 years, we are thrilled to be developing a new vision of our much beloved franchise for audiences worldwide. Historically, the Space: 1999 brand has entertained and fascinated millions of people.”
If they bring back the eagle, et al, and drop the whole moon travelling at super luminal speed part I am on board. Maybe have it be some other spacecraft instead, but not the frigging moon.

I loved the original series and have met a few of the cast. A re-imagining of the series would be great. I hope they can pull it off.
I have to agree with Sean, if they re-imagine the series as something other than the moon traveling through space, it has potential. Maybe a Pandorum or Starlost space ark hurtling through space could work. Less pyrotechnics too, unless this is an interstellar semiconductor factory, able to replace all of those components. I’m also less interested in interstellar doorways to hell being open with demons, ghosts, werewolves, Jason X, Dracula 3000, Freddie K, or Michael M pouring through to mutilate in the dark. Lets hope that this bad boy is a true re-imagining with imagination, else I’ll just dial along blissfully.
Looking forward to this – hopefully there will be enough UK influence to stop the usual mudslide of US corn.
I wonder who they will get to replace Martin Landau as the base commander. Bring back the Eagle because that will probably be the type of craft we’ll be using when the base and hotel are open on the moon with weekly flights by Virgin Galactic from Earth. And the premise of a nuclear waste dump on the Moon exploding and providing the thrust for the Moon to break free of Earth’s gravity was good for the mid-1970’s when disaster movies and shows were all the rage.
I did not get to see the first Space as I was station overseas during the running, being retired I am glad to see a remake, and would love to see the original series, I keep hoping that Hulu or Netflix picks it up for TV viewing
