Fox’s debut of Alcatraz delivered the network’s highest ratings for a drama debut in three years Monday evening. The two-hour episode saw 10 million total viewers, an 3.3 rating in adults 18-49 demographic.
Compared to last year’s midseason launch of The Chicago Code, Alcatraz was up a hefty 38 percent among adults 18-49. Despite no lead-in, Alcatraz is tied with ABC’s Revenge as the season’s second-highest rated new drama.
That’s good news for the new J.J. Abrams series but may be bad news for Terra Nova. Fox was reportedly waiting for ratings on its mid-season shows before deciding Nova’s fate.

I watched both hours and noticed sloppy writing .. not a good thing.
FIRST, there was NO reason for our “prisoner of the week” to be asked for his ticket for the return trip to shore on the boat. EVERYONE there came over on the boat, and the few that didn’t .. came over on another boat .. that will take them back.
SECOND: Do police walkie-talkies now come with built-in GPS? Because our detective grabbed an injured officers radio, called in a “officer down” .. but didn’t say WHERE. She then dropped the radio and ran off.
THIRD: The Winchester Model 70 does NOT come “tricked out” with a two piece stock, threaded barrel (for silencer), and silencer.
FOURTH: When our dynamic duo figure out that the shooter’s range was shorter than the rest of the police. She said that they were looking in the wrong place. Like the police would ONLY look at the MAXIMUM distance a shooter would be.
Yeah, I caught a couple of those slops as well. “We need help, you should know where we are!”
Another one was when they found the empty shell at the shooting site on the hill, she just picks it up with her bare hands, not worrying about fingerprints at all.
I also think they need to address that there no doubt will be prisoners that wake up in the future, and freak the hell out. So far they’ve just nonchalantly walked out, take a brief glimpse and act like nothing has happened.
The high ratings are nothing more than a consequence of hype. I was really hoping for a good serial story instead of a procedural cop show, for that I’d rather watch Grimm.
The first two episodes were entertaining enough and I really do enjoy seeing Garcia back in something. However, the small errors are making it hard to continue my normal ‘suspension of disbelief’ that SFish shows require. Especially when it is details that any small bit of research would have discovered. In addition to the ones listed in the above comments; 1)Cobb being able to buy a rifle without filling out a 4473 is a big no go, him being able to buy a suppressor which are completely illegal in CA, him being able to walk out of the shop with the rifle – there’s a ten day waiting period in CA, and just so many more things that were incorrect about firearms in that episode. Overall, I enjoy the show, but really JJ, we expect better out of you.
