Fox Pondering Future of “Nova,” “Fringe”

Fox Pondering Future of “Nova,” “Fringe”

January 9, 2012 By Mike Hickerson 9 Comments

If you’re looking for some good news on the future of Terra Nova and Fringe, the only good news is they haven’t been given a pink slip yet.

At the Television Critics Association Winter meetings, Fox entertainment chief Kevin Reilly says the network is still looking at the future for those shows and several other long-running series.

The odds are looking better for Terra Nova based on his comments, though a lot will depend on how the upcoming new crop of shows fare in the ratings.

“We’ve done a good job of avoiding these big decisions,” Reilly joked, but he emphasized outsized expectations for the costly series, which is filmed in Australia, and says it was the fall’s second-highest rated new drama among young-adult viewers. “If the show hadn’t worked, I still wouldn’t be apologizing.”

As for Fringe, the odds are looking less positive.

Reilly said he was happy not to “turn our backs on genre fans.” But “the hesitation in my voice is it’s an expensive show, we lose a lot of money on the show, and at that rating on that night it’s impossible to make money, and we’re in the business of making money.” Though he said that doesn’t amount to an early cancellation, signs aren’t good. But “please don’t start the letter-writing campaign right now, I can’t take it. That’s another decision we have to make.” And again, they need to plan far enough ahead so that producers can wrap up the series if this is indeed the end.

There’s also questions about the future of House, which could be made soon.

We’ll keep you updated on the latest developments as we know them.

*sigh* Whatever at this point. Just give me a good Season 4 ending on Fringe and I’ll be happy with that.

I like Terra Nova for a complete different reason though – it’s just campy fun.

So, we took a successful show, on a different night, and moved it to a crappy time slot on Friday, where all fox shows go to die, and SURPRISE…it’s not doing well in ratings. Freeking FOX, it’s a shame, since all the CRAP that’s one TV, shows like Fringe get killed due to poor product management.

Way to go Fox!!! How can it not be making money? That is a load of crap in itself. The advertisers are there, the fans are there the DVD’s are selling so the only issue is the time slot that they chose. As to not writing letters but we are told to wait untilt hey decide? Then it is too late if we wait to tell them. This tells me that the end is nigh. Oh Well- Hopefully they end it well. I would rather have Fringe than Nova.

I thought the decision on House was made the end of last year that this would be the final season for the show. I must admit that where Fringe is concerned the writers & network blundered big time. First the whole idea of Peter becoming a non-existent entity was a huge mistake. They could have done so much more with a different storyline once he went into the machine. Fox screwed up by moving a ratings winner to that black hole of programming called Friday night. Terra Nova should be given at least one more season to prove it has growth & staying power. By the close of its freshman debut it was beginning to pick up pretty decently.

I think I’ll start the letter writing campaign but I’ll hold off on the letter sending campaign.

Obviously Fox has fallen over to Walternate’s universe. Writing letters won’t help with them either. Maybe they can move Bill O from the news channel to pick up their numbers.

Drop “Terra Nova” which doesn’t deserve a Season 2 and give us a proper ending for “FRINGE” in Season 5. FOX must be trying to get us all “talking” and get the press talking. I can’t imagine they’d go with “Terra Nova” over “FRINGE”. That’s just totally ridiculous!
