The latest installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise took the top spot at the box office for the Christmas weekend.
Mission: Impossible: Ghost Recon took in $26.5 million in its first weekend of wide release.
Overall, the weekend was slower than many in Hollywood expected or predicted based on the opening of some new heavy hitters.
Sherlock Holmes: Book of Shadows fell to second with $17.8 million. Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked sang its way to $13.3 million.
Two new films rounded out the top five. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was fourth with $13 million and The Adventures of Tin-Tin was fifth with $9.1 million.
