Mirren As The Doctor?

December 22, 2011 By Michael Hickerson 4 Comments

Since the early 80’s, each time the current actor playing the Doctor has announced his departure, rumors sprang up that the next Doctor could be a female.

And while that hasn’t happened yet, one Oscar winning actress thinks it should happen and that she should play the Doctor.

Oscar-winner Helen Mirren recently said that she wants to star in Doctor Who, but not as a companion or a guest star.  She wants to be the Doctor.

“I would like to play the new female Doctor Who. I don’t want to just be his sidekick,” she tells the UK’s Daily Mirror.

But what about the current Doctor, Matt Smith.  Smith has signed on for all of next year but beyond that, it’s anyone’s guess.  Smith says thinks Mirren as the Doctor would be great.

”Helen Mirren would be great in Doctor Who. Also Eric Cantona and Vincent Cassel—he would be number one actually,” Smith says.

My top two candidates are Helen Mirren or Idris Elba. Why not pull for the best? And they are the best with or without breaking “tradition”.

I see Idris as more of a James Bond type. But they went less geeky with Eccleston so it might work.
