Shatner Fires Back

Shatner Fires Back

December 1, 2011 By Mike Hickerson 11 Comments

The war of words between William Shatner and Carrie Fisher has escalated once again.

You may recall that Shatner fired the first salvo a few weeks ago, saying that Star Trek was better than Star Wars.  That prompted Fisher to fire back at Shatner, saying he wished he could play the role of Darth Vader and then challenging him to a bikini-off featuring the slave Leia costume.

Now Shatner has posted his own video response via his YouTube channel, called “Dearest Carrie.”

In the segment, Shatner says he did ask Lucas for the role of Vader, but “They got this big, heavy-voiced guy. I was gonna play Darth Vader [high voice] high like this. ‘I am your father.’ It would have been sensational. But no, they wouldn’t have me.”

As for that bikini-off, Shatner says he doesnt’ believe Fisher is ready for it.

“My costume was made of stretch material, so there wouldn’t be any difficulty in giving it a little push here and there for me to go to my original wardrobe,” he says.  “But you in a bikini, now, needs a little more than push and pull. It needs a lot of uplift.”

Shatner tops it all off by taking aim at the Star Wars movies and George Lucas, saying the movies had good special effects but forgot the story.

“Talking about special effects, it’s true: Star Wars did have the best special effects. In fact, everything about Star Wars was special effects. It was great special effects. I envy the special effects. The only thing is you guys forgot about story. Story, and character and plot development, those kinda basic things,” he says.

Man… the cynical part of me wonders if this isn’t all just a publicity stunt for the two of them. BUT if it isn’t, just because you’re at the age where you can start wearing diapers again doesn’t mean you have to start acting like children. Round one was my dad can beat up your dad. Round two was I’m fat but you’re skinny. What’s round three going to be, sticks and stones, your mother wears army boots? An adult should step in and say, “Shat, Fish, Shatfish, STFU.”

Would these two just get it on already. Man it’s like moonlighting.

Was going to say they were behaving like two little bratty children but I see someone already beat me to it…I guess when it’s obvious…it’s obvious.

It’s just a bit of fun, surely.

I believe they are poking fun at each other in that sibling rivalry sort of way… I mean, when your fans can’t win the fight over whose franchise was best, what else can you do?

But seriously, I’d rather watch these two catfight than the rest of the crap being pawned off on us as “reality” television 🙂

I’m kinda in that cynical camp also, wondering if it’s not just another Trump/Odonnel publicity scam. I watched Trek Nation last night and really appreciated the way Lucas put it. It’s two totally different franchises with different story points. Star Wars is more of a Opera where Star Trek is a story in and of itself. Every SW movie/show/cartoon, what have you is connected. Deeply connected to one another. Nearly every ST show, movie, cartoon is a stand alone episode.

People really need to move out of their parents basements sometimes and maybe even touch a real girl. Even if they have to pay for it.

First, I’m with Summer 100% on this. I don’t think they are being serious at all. It sounds like a fun bit of verbal sparing to me.

Second, I have to disagree a tiny bit with John about the differences in the franchises. The perspective of SW as opera is accurate, but, when you look at the ST franchise as a whole, TNG, DS9, & VOY were all very threaded. Not only within their respective series, but with a fair amount of cross-pollination to boot. My personal take is that SW was an epic saga (a la, LotR) while ST was a matinee serial.

But then, what do I know anyway…

I don’t see ST as a cohesive whole. Yes, I’m a little biased, but I always thought the reason why DS9 and VOY took place so close to TNG was so that they could make use of stunt casting characters who were favorites from TNG, thus drawing back in old fans who’d maybe soured on the new shows. Enterprise had a lot of potential to go a long way, but that was cut short.

And yes, while I believe Lucas blew it with the prequel trilogy (eviscerated the golden goose, butchered it poorly, marinated it with rancid barbeque sauce, burned it on the grill, then left it to rot in the sun where not even ravens would touch it), the first trilogy was the better saga, and while it does have a couple warts, I’m not stuck with the “remastered” versions.

I still have my original versions to watch. I even stopped paying attention to the many DVD releases, because for so long Lucas said the original theatrical versions would never see the light of day again.

I guess ol’ Shat forgot about “Star Trek the Motion Picture” when he was talking about story is more important than special effects! Special effects was all that movie had! Pretty dated now, but awesome when it first came out!

I think this argument is meant to be taken about as seriously as those old Point-Counterpoint sketches with Dan Akroyd and Jane Curtin.
