ABC Developing TV Series Set in “The Avengers” Universe

ABC Developing TV Series Set in “The Avengers” Universe

November 17, 2011 By Mike Hickerson Leave a Comment

ABC is developing a television series set in the universe of Marvel’s upcoming Avengers movie.

The series, from Brian Michael Bendis, will be A.K.A. Jessica Jones and based on the comic book series Alias.  The show will take place firmly within the universe established by Iron Man, Captain America and Thor.

The series by Bendis and artist Michael Gaydos centers on Jessica Jones, a retired superhero who opened her own private investigation firm and worked cases that brought her back into contact with the world she left behind.

Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg has been developing the script for the project and recently confirmed that this series will be set in the big-screen Marvel continuity.

“As we go along things will alter in terms of what is made available to us, but we’re definitely in that universe,” she says. “We are in no way denying that that universe exists. And as much as I can I’m going to pull everything in from there that I can use.”

She goes on to say that Tony Stark and Stark Industries are part of the pilot.  However, that doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll see all member of the Marvel comic book universe in the show.

“It’s very tricky navigation there,” she adds. “You can’t mention one guy because Fox has the rights to that guy and Universal has the rights to the other one. There are a lot of boundaries on who you can and can’t use.”

But she did score a pair of heavy hitters: Luke Cage, who goes on to develop a relationship with Jones in the comics, and Carol Danvers/Ms. Marvel, currently an Avenger.

“Basically, I wanted those three guys—then I would have a series. Everyone else we can be digging into lesser known characters or taking known characters and renaming them,” she adds.

This project is separate from the reboot of the Hulk that ABC is currently considering.
