20th Century Fox is moving forward on the big-screen version of Issac Asimov’s Caves of Steel.
The studio that gave us I, Robot and Avatar has tapped Simon Kinberg to produced and first-timer Henry Hobson to direct the film.
The script will be written by John Scott. The story is set 1,000 years in the future and revolves around a murder mystery in a world with serious a overpopulation problem and where robots are banned from Earth. The man found dead is an Ambassador who wants to ease the anti-robot laws. Assigned to solve the crime is a detective and a “human-looking robot.”
No word yet on how closely to the source material this project may stick. Hopefully they’ll do a better job than I, Robot.

Bailey and Olivaw finally coming to Big Screen?
Please don’t make it suck, please don’t make it suck, please don’t make it suck…
From what I remember robots weren’t banned from earth, they just aren’t liked by the general population and thus don’t interact with humans much. But they do work on farms, mine and perform various tasks outside the covered cities where the agoraphobic human race can’t or won’t go. I’m just hoping this doesn’t end up like “I Robot” because if they do it right, they can make a solid trilogy.
Jayson, Banned is a little strong. Development of robots was severely curtailed. I believe they weren’t allowed within the cities… but then I also seem to remember a robot working at the police station where Lije Bailey worked. I could be wrong, though, apparently humans on Earth had a real problem with robots looking more and more human. R. Daneel Olivaw was outright heresy. Ooops… Um… SPOILER…
Lejon, don’t worry about spoilers because I doubt the movie will be anything like the book. Anyway, while the article mentions the robot aspect, it should be worth noting that the conflict between the earth bound humans and the spacers (colonists from the 50 planets) is really more interesting. I’m really hoping the movie has the same kind of depth that the book had.
NO I robot!!!!! Robots were not banned but very limited and hated.
