“Primeval” Gets Canadian Spin-Off

“Primeval” Gets Canadian Spin-Off

September 20, 2011 By Mike Hickerson 3 Comments

Primeval‘s universe is expanding.  The British series is getting a Canadian produced spin-off called Primeval: New World.

Produced by Canada’s SPACE TV, the series will be set in the same universe as the British version.

The series will run 13 one hour long episodes and will build on the UK Primeval mythology.  The story will centre on a new Canadian team of animal experts taking on whatever past or future creatures come through the anomalies that are now appearing around the world.

The creative team behind New World boasts an all Canadian team of writers, and takes place in Vancouver.

This new series will be “darker and scarier” than the original and it will have a younger, sexier cast and lots of gory special effects to go with it, reports SFX.

Production is set to start in the winter of 2012 and the show will be filmed mostly in Vancouver. The special effects of the show will be dealt by Impossible’s London group. Jonathan Drake, managing director of Impossible says that this is not a continuation of Primeval but rather “a bigger, better, badder re-imagining of the show”.

Aw, that’s cute. Canada is getting in on the whole remaking/re-imagining of British tv shows to be ‘better’. *rolls eyes* My only complaint with the original has been the cast turn-over. It’s way too high. There’s no need for younger/darker/edgier in that universe.

This series is one of the highlights in campy, sci-fi. Even with the cast changes, it hasn’t lost its sense of fun and dino-gekky wonderment. Last season was a nice way to close one of the overarching major chapters in this series. I can’t wait for the next season. I don’t know about the spin-off, but I’ll watch it too.

Younger cast? Most of the cast is pretty young already. We talking High School kids?
