Fox Developing “The Spectre”

Fox Developing “The Spectre”

September 15, 2011 By Mike Hickerson 3 Comments

Looks like the CW isn’t the only potential home for tv shows based on DC characters.

According to Deadline, Fox is developing a series based on DC’s The Spectre.

The Spectre is a dead police officer resurrected and possessed by the spirit of God’s vengeance and driven to punish wrongdoers.

The character was invented by Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel and Bernard Baily in 1940.

Brandon Camp (John Doe) will write and executive produce the adaptation alongside producer Bill Gerber (Gran Torino).

Is this different from the “Spirit” movie main character? (I’m not making some insulting comment about there being no new ideas, I’m genuinely asking if its the same property…)

Yes, they are different characters from different creators. Wil Eisner’s The Spirit was a completely mortal detective who took advantage of his presumed death to create a secret identity.

The Spectre is more of an avenging supernatural being with nasty magic powers.

Joaquim dos Santos directed an excellent “Showcase” animated mini feature based on him a couple of years ago. It was included with the other Showcase segments on the “Superman/Shazam: The Return of Black Adam” video release last year.

The short was also included as an extra on the Blu Ray release of “Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths.”
