CW Developing “Deadman”

CW Developing “Deadman”

August 26, 2011 By Mike Hickerson 5 Comments

With Smallville sailing off into the sunset, the CW is looking for a new DC hero to front a series.

And winner is…..Deadman.

If you’re wondering, “Who?” we’ve got some details for you.

Deadman, aka Boston Brand, was a famous acrobat until he was murdered by a man with a hook for a hand. He’s given the chance to avenge his death by faux Hindu goddess Rama Kushna as a spirit who can inhabit the bodies of others. He continues on, though, inhabiting the bodies of others and helping them solve crises in their own lives.

As you may have gathered, the character isn’t one of the first tier characters at DC, but that could work in the series favor.

And here’s another thing that is in it’s favor.  The series is being developed by Supernatural creator Eric Kripke.

We’ll keep our ears open for details.

I remember the original series from the early 1970s. It was sort of a supernatural version of “The Fugitive.” I think it influenced the most recent Harry Dresden novel, which has a similar premise.

Didn’t Scott Bakula do a show with that take a few years ago.

Yeah John, I thought it had “Quantum Leap” written all over it.

Deadman as a character has always been an interesting one in the comics as he was always the GATEWAY character. His solo stories were unique and compelling to some extent because of his predicament. Even in the latest run of BRIGHTEST DAY in the DCU, he was given more airtime, but STILL as a gateway character to lead to other more challenging storylines. So while this is a fairly unique and interesting character in comics, I think it would get old and fairly repetitive on TV. I’m not against the idea, but DC (while few) has more interesting characters they could tackle.

There’s aspects of Quantum Leap that could be applied to the character, but only in the essence of the nature in which he interacts with people, not in the tone, storylines or even the character himself. So the leap (no pun intended) to compare this to QL, are slightly unwarranted in this case.

I’ve never read the Deadman comics, but I actually think this would be a pretty cool TV show. I see Deadman as DC’s version of The Crow and since I really enjoyed The Crow movies and TV show, Deadman sounds to me like a good character to make into a TV series. The only thing I fear is that it will be exactly like The Crow: Stairway to Heaven and last for only one season.
