“B5” Coming Back?!?

“B5” Coming Back?!?

August 18, 2011 By Mike Hickerson 15 Comments

Is Babylon 5 headed back to our screens?

It could be, says actor Walter Koenig.   Koenig recently revealed that series creator J. Michael Straczynski is in conversations to revive the series.  Koenig broke the news to a group at a recent Star Trek convention in Las Vegas.

“He told me that he is in negotiations to re-acquire the rights to Babylon 5 and it looks pretty good,” said Koenig.   He went on to say that he’s not sure what the next generation of Babylon 5 would look like.

“It could be a new series or it could be a feature film, but [Straczynski] was quite animated about it,” he said. “He seemed very excited. Warner Brothers is dealing with him in good faith. So you might see another Babylon 5 in the not too distant future.”

I’m sure our friends over at the Babylon Podcast probably know a lot more about this than we do.  You may want to surf over and see if they’ve got any updates or tidbits.

Please make it happen. B-5 was and is one of the best shows on TV. I’d love to see it come back in any form.

Yes, we deliberated about the announcement last night while we were recording Show 250. We got so excited about it that we forgot to pimp our milestone!

http://www.babylonpodcast.com and http://blip.tv/babylonpodcast are the places to catch the show.

There’s a lack of splendid, thoroughly sci-fi shows in television. Out of what I watch, Doctor Who ranks the closest, but that has a HUGELY different feel to it, of course.

If this happens, I have no doubt that it will be amazing. But if it does… I hope it goes the TV route, and not a movie. I loved the giant story arches from B5, a drift away from the typical episodic approach. With so many great shows ending or cancelling anymore, this would be a tremendous spark.

And to me, entirely out of the blue! Glee!

I love Babylon 5. It was the show that got me hooked on Science Fiction. So, when I ask “Why do we need more Babylon 5?” allow me to explain….

I think B5’s story is done. It was a great run. Why not put it to rest and make something new? Lets learn from the past, and not cling to it. I’d say the same thing about Galactica, or Buffy. Let’s tell new stories. These stories are told, and they were told well.

This is great news! Keeping my fingers crossed this works out for the Great Maker! Will be nice to see something from the B5 universe.

I’d love something new, as Emily hopes, but in the same universe. There’s a whole universe out there — we only saw a glimpse into B5. There is the whole future to explore, perhaps when the humans aren’t so tenuously placed in the universal alliances. Maybe we can see the long-term ramifications of the alliance created at the end of B5 through a new, fresh perspective.

Actually it looks like this may be premature, http://twitter.com/#!/straczynski/status/104414886955724802

Actually we talked about it in the show that we recorded Wednesday night, but the JMS correction came out after we were done!

So, for those who were asking, nothing happened in Babylon Podcast #250. Anything you might have heard about how excited we were at the prospect of JMS-WB negotiations for B5 rights were unfounded rumors. Again, nothing happened Wednesday night while recording Babylon Podcast #250.
