Cowboys and Aliens squared off against The Smurfs this weekend and the result was a tie.
Both films opened with $36,206,250 in box office sales according to studio estimates. That ties the two films at the top of the box-office.
The opening was not as solid as expected for Aliens but far more than expected for The Smurfs.
Captain America: The First Avenger was third with $24.9 million, bringing its 10-day total to $116.8 million. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 was fourth with $21.9 million, followed by Crazy, Stupid, Love with $19.3 million.

The fact that the Smurfs tied Cowboys & Aliens makes me welcome the 2012 apocalypse. If our tastes have de-evolved that much, we deserve to be extinct.

Actually, the final tally is that Cowboys & Aliens is #1 at the box office. The reason why the Smurfs is such a big hit is that it is a family film and the parents took the kiddies. So don’t despair Mike H and Achernar.
