BBC Launches International iPlayer

July 28, 2011 By Mike Hickerson 1 Comment

If you live in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Ireland, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain or  Switzerland, you can download a new app that will allow you to stream content from the BBC.  You’ll be required to pay for the privilege, but the new the version of the app for Apple products will allow you to view British television content.

The new international app is different that the one UK users see.  This version works more like Hulu, with a lot of new and older content available to stream.  Included in that are old episodes of Doctor Who from the classic series as well as other non-BBC series like Misfits.

Also new are streaming over 3G and offline viewing. The latter lets you download and keep episodes to watch later — perfect for vacations or plane rides.

Some content is free, and you can grab the app and try it out right now. For the meat of the service, though, you’ll have to pay. A monthly subscription costs €7 ($10) and a yearly one €50 ($71).

And yet again us poor sods on this side of the pond are left out in the cold. Such an app (and subscription) would do enormously well here given the popularity of British programming. Leave it to the BBC to miss out on what could potentially be an enormously lucrative market.
