3-D Coming to Cars

3-D Coming to Cars

July 28, 2011 By Mike Hickerson 2 Comments

3-D technology is headed to the dashboard.

Based on the growth in non-glasses requiring 3-D technology like Nintendo’s 3DS and Sprint’s HTC Evo 3D, Mercedes Benz is planning to bring 3-D to the dashboard.

The technology would be used in an in-dash mounted display screen that could give GPS information as well as provide warnings about potential problems. Important information could be highlighted in the foreground while other, less pertinent content can be relegated to the background.

The 3-D move is just one part of several technological updates that Mercedes is pursuing.

The company is working on more intuitive voice commands, allowing users to ask context-driven questions like “What’s the weather in New York City?” Checking e-mail, text messages, and sending outgoing messages will also be possible, though this kind of tech is already available in other car models

Gesture controls are also being implemented, allowing users to quickly jump to specific menus or features on the touch-screen display by swiping their fingers in a specific motion.

Sigh….can we just let 3D die and be done with it for another decade or two?

I don’t have a problem with interactive 3D in a HUD (Heads Up Display) in a vehicle or in video games because they are supposed to immerse you more. In my tv & film viewing, I want to relax, take in the full movie & not have my eyes feel exhausted afterwards. With tv & film, as long as they continue to provide the opportunity of viewing it in 2D as well, I have no problem with it.
