Universal Pictures is moving forward with the big-screen adaptation of Umbrella Academy.
Deadline is reporting that Dodgeball director Rawson Thurber is rewriting the script and will return it to the forefront of Universal’s in-production projects. There’s no news yet on whether he will also end up directing the movie, or whether Universal will hire someone else once the script rewrite is complete.
The first script treatment was by Live Free or Die Hard writer Mark Bomback.
The Umbrella Academy centers on a group of adopted youngsters with strange powers who are raised and trained by an alien named Sir Reginald Hargreeves. They eventually disband and go their separate ways, but reunite as adults when Hargreeves is killed.
The comic book miniseries was well-received upon its release in 2007, and even went on to win an Eisner Award. Originally Alfonso Cuarón had been rumored to direct the adaptation, but now the director’s spot is still open.
