Author Scott Westerfield has announced this his best-selling teen series Uglies is being adapted for manga and the silver screen.
In the series teens undergo extreme plastic surgery to become pretty. The series follows a Tally Youngblood, who joins a group of rebels who elect not to have the procedure done when they turn 16.
The manga will be a parallel story to the novels, told from the perspective of Shay.
Westerfield told this weekend’s Comic Con that the Uglies series will be released as four graphic novels. He is writing the script and Steven Cumming. Westerfield tells io9 that he was inspired to tell the story from Tally’s perspective because so many readers accused Shay of simply being a “bitch,” and he wanted to explore the other other side of the Tally-Shay story. The first volume is due out in May 2012.
As for the movie adaptation, Westerfield says the story is still in the script stage. However, recent developments allowing for Chris Evans to be made scrawny in Captain America give hope that the effects needed will soon be available for the film.
