Marvel Offering Retailers Incentives Not to Sell DC

Marvel Offering Retailers Incentives Not to Sell DC

July 27, 2011 By Mike Hickerson 3 Comments

Who says the battle between DC and Marvel can’t get any more heated?

As the two battle for sales dominance, Marvel is pulling out all the stops to make sure its epic cross-over event is a better seller than DC’s.   Marvel has promised comic book retailers that for every 50 issues of the Flashpoint series that the retailer rips the cover from, it will give them one free copy of Fear Itself #6 with a rare, variant cover.

Blastr looked at the sales figures for both series and determined that issue two of Fear Itself sold more copies than the first issue of Flashpoint.  And it’s reported that with copies of Flashpoint piling up, that retailers might want a way to get rid of the extra copies and still be able to turn a profit.

And because Flashpoint is a lead-in to the DC reboot later this year, it could also help Marvel come September.

So Marvel supports destroying comic books. Reminds me of book burnings. I can’t believe a publisher would resort to such a disgusting tactic. I’m a fan of born Marvel & DC but maybe I should just buy DC & get my Marvel titles through some kind of alternate means.

I can’t believe this is happening and from Marvel of all places. I could believe DC doing this, considering some of the shady things I heard Warner Bros. doing in the past, but c’mon Marvel!

I wonder who made this decision, and if it was pressured by Disney management.
