Disney Planning Live Action “Gargoyles”

July 20, 2011 By Mike Hickerson 5 Comments

While it may sound a lot like the premise for the 90s animated series Gargoyles, Disney insists that the upcoming film of the same name is not based on the cartoon series.

A new live-action movie that follows statues on buildings coming to life who act as guardian angels over their city.

Sounds a lot like the original animated version to us.

The script will be written by David Elliot and Paul Lovett who worked on G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

Also on board according to Variety is Lauren Schuler Donner who will be stepping in to the role of producer as development kicks into high gear.

I would love to see what Pixar or Dreamworks could do for a Gragoyles animated movie. Although they seem more interested in doing more original material (not mad at them).

Not based on the cartoon series? Unfortunate.

I love the cartoon series, and would gladly pay full ticket price to see a live action Gargoyle movie based on the cartoon. It’s saddening that it won’t be based on the cartoon, but being that Disney is making it they could do right by keeping the same cool/funny factor of “How to Train Your Dragon”.

“The script will be written by David Elliot and Paul Lovett who worked on G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.” Great. I used to really enjoy Gargoyles… now there will nothing but semi-cool effects and really REALLY crappy dialogue.

Unfortunately I agree with you. Gargoyles was one of my favorite 90s cartoons, it was, for the most part, smart, funny, and somewhat educational with all the shakespearean references. Heck it got some friends of mine into sharespeare.
