Could a former Doctor be joining HBO’s Game of Thrones for its second season?
That’s the rumor floating around the Internet and Hollywood this morning. According to rumors, actor Christopher Eccleston could be joining the cast of Thrones for its second season.
Who might he play, you ask?
The rumor mill indicates that Eccleston could play Stannis Baratheon, brother of Robert Baratheon. We heard Stannis mentioned multiple times during the first season but never saw him. Stannis first appeared in the second book, A Clash of Kings.
The other role Eccleston is also likely to be up for could be that of Balon Greyjoy—Theon Greyjoy’s father and the Lord of the Iron Islands who will proclaim himself king.
We also have some confirmed casting news for season two. Former The Tudors actress Natalie Dormer has nabbed the role of Margaery Tyrell, a beautiful and shrewd young woman from the influential House Tyrell. She’s pledged to marry the late King Robert’s brother, Renly Baratheon, as part of House Tyrell’s support for his bid to seize the Iron Throne from King Joffrey.
Michael Natale says
If this isn’t just a rumor, Eccleston would be a great actor to play Stannis.
Not sure if he’d be a fit for Balon though. I’d though Balon Greyjoy was alot older than Eccleston would be able to pull off. If I remember correctly from the novels, Greyjoy was raising his rebellion against Robert 25 years before Game of Thrones began.
Now if they could just figure out a way to put Ian McShane, Kevin McKidd or Ray Stevenson in the show, that would be perfect.

Ian McShane would be perfect as Mance Rayder
