Rowling Gives Details on Pottermore

Rowling Gives Details on Pottermore

June 23, 2011 By Mike Hickerson 2 Comments

Muggles curious to know more about Pottermore got their wish this morning.  Author J.K. Rowling revealed her plans for the web site and where the Potter franchise is headed.

Saying that she wants to use the new website to build “an exciting online experience around the reading of the Harry Potter books,” Rowling said the new site will go fully live on October 1. It will then feature games fan can play surrounding the Potter experience as well as e-book versions of the best-selling novels.

This will be the first time the novels have been officially available in e-book form.

She hopes the site will encourage more young fans to read her book. “I wanted to pull it back to the reading, to the literary and story experience…I’ve had a lot to do with virtually every aspect of it,” she told reporters at the London launch of Pottmore.com.

But she dashed rumors that she’s working on an eight sequel.

“I do have closure with Harry,” Rowling said. “I have no plans to write another novel. I’m pretty sure I’m done on the novel front…But it was fun while it lasted.”

The eBooks will be available exclusively on Pottermore.com.

“It is my view you can’t hold back progress,” she said of the decision to put them online. “Ebooks are here and here to stay. Later than a lot of people, I for the first time downloaded ebooks and it’s miraculous for travel and for children in particular. I feel great about taking Harry into this new medium.”

“been officially available in e-book form”.

Officially. That’s funny. I’ve been reading them in e-book format pretty much the whole time. I have no qualms about it since I own both the hardback and audio versions of all 7 books.

“It is my view you can’t hold back progress,”…”I feel great about taking Harry into this new medium.”

Silly bunt. She’s been fighting the e-book format the whole time due to piracy concerns and now all of a sudden she doesn’t want to hold back progress?

And if they are only available on pottermore.com what format will they be in? PDF? ePub? Some proprietary format?

If I can’t read them on my Kindle or iPad I guess I will have to wait a little longer for my “official” versions since my unofficial versions work on both.

So… it’s a money grab… ah well, can’t fault her. Good on the e-books, though.
