McAvoy: “3-D Is a Waste of Money”

June 20, 2011 By Mike Hickerson 4 Comments

Actor James McAvoy says he was relieved when his current movie X-Men: First Class wasn’t shot in or converted to 3-D.

“Thank God this movie [X-Men: First Class] is not in 3D, which is just an excuse to charge an extra ten bucks at the theatre,” McAvoy said. “Then in the end, they’re not 3D at all. The idea of things coming out of the screen and making you jump out your seat are done very well, but I think it’s a waste of time and money and I wouldn’t pay for a ticket to go to one of those films.”

The 32-year-old continued: “I maintain you can’t do a good conversion of a two-hour movie with high quality in a few weeks like they tried to do with Clash of the Titans.”

“Converted” to 3D .. yes .. it is crap. “Shot for 3D” .. can be good, great or crap .. it all depends on the director.

I hate 3D they charge extra, so cant pay the extra to take all my kids to the movies….we ususally do a movie a week this summer we’ve only seen 1. I’m not happy with the movie industry.

3D only makes sense if you have a story that will be enhanced by it. Avatar really didn’t need 3D but, being the first real test of the new technology, it wasn’t a terrible thing. But, as Richard indicated, slapping on 3D as an afterthought is horrible. It’s a waste of time and money.
