J.J. Abrams’ latest film Super 8 hit theaters this weekend and took the top spot at the box-office. The debut took in $37 million for its opening weekend.
That total doesn’t include $1 million in ticket sales from a special advance showing on Thursday night for Twitter followers.
In second was X-Men: First Class, taking in $25 million and second place. The fifth installment of the franchise has done $98.9 million in 10 days.
The Hangover Part II took third place with $18.5 million, lifting its overall three-week gross to $216.6 million.
Kung Fu Panda 2 was fourth with $16.6 million, for a $126.9 million three-week total, followed by Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides with $10.8 million for $208.8 million over four weeks.
The other new wide release, Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer, drew $6.3 million, good for seventh place.

It was a good flick, but the it didn’t deserve or NEED the hype or mystery. The MYSTERY of the movie was the biggest fail of the film, however the kid actors were really really good. Especially the Fanning sister. She pretty much was the breakout star of the flick. The ‘monster’ was probably the least interesting part of the movie. Thus, it kind of reminded me of ‘Cloverfield’ where the monster was the background noise, but not the point really.
It was a great melding of JJ Abram’s style and Speilberg’s sentiment. Thus, it had some mild suspense, with a nice whimisical flare. The score was AMAZING, it was a true throwback to the classical style of movie storytelling.
All in all, it was a good movie, not great… not worth a full boat price, but a good matinee showing.

I loved this movie, not because of the monster, but because of the kids. This is a character driven plot, and it was done with all of the nods to past Amblin films.
I will easily see this movie again and I will own it when it comes out on Blu-Ray!
