“Lone Ranger” Rides Again in 2012

June 9, 2011 By Mike Hickerson 6 Comments

Hi, ho Silver, away!

The Lone Ranger will ride onto the silver screen on December 12, 2012.  Disney announced the news yesterday.

The new movie will be a new look at the Lone Ranger with Johnny Depp set to star as Tonto.  Armie Hammer will play the title character.

The movie reunites Depp with Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski.

The holiday season of 2012 is looking to be packed with blockbuster releases.  Ranger joins The Hobbit and possibly the follow-up to Star Trek.

Cool! Hopefully it will be more like the Zorro reboots and less like the comedy reboots we’ve been having lately. Namely something like Starsky and Hutch or The Dukes of Hazzard.

Let’s not forget the awful Wild Wild West remake.

As an unapologetic Lome Ranger fan from way back, I hold out cautious optimism here. I just hope they don’t try to turn the Lone Ranger into some Western version of the Dark Knight.

That would be my fear too. It needs to be good old fashioned western crime fighting. Hopefully, they don’t try to use the Silver Bullets to hunt werewolves or something. It sort of worries me that Depp will be Tonto. I see too much “comic relief” being added into this script and it’s probably not even written yet.

Personally, I kinda liked “Legend of the Lone Ranger” that came out back in the 80’s. I was only 10 then and I still loved watching the old Clayton Moore series on TV back in the days of Rabbit ears.
