If you missed Source Code in theaters or just want to see it again, you can wait for the Blu-Ray and DVD release on July 26 or you can watch via Video On Demand on July 8.
Summit is testing the waters for releasing the movie via On Demand earlier than its DVD release with the film.
Summit Home Entertainment president Steve Nickerson says that “We are only conducting a test in this case and not making an overall policy shift at this time.”
If it seems kind of a quick turnaround for Source Code to be hitting home theater this soon, that’s because the release window is shorter than usual for most big-budget theatrical releases. We don’t know yet how much viewers will have to pay to watch the film in the two weeks before it hits DVD and Blu-Ray.
Of course, the move is drawing protest from some in Hollywood. Several directors including Christopher Nolan and Quentin Tarantino are not pleased about the shorter window for theatrical releases. They and others say that a theatrical release helps generate buzz for the film and may draw in audiences beyond the first weekend or two a film is in release.
“The creative community understands the vital importance of robust theatrical release windows to their art form and their business interests. We are pleased today to announce additional signers of our creative community letter, including directors David Dobkin, Jon Favreau, Chris Nolan, M. Night Shyamalan, and Quentin Tarantino, as well as producers Mark Boal and Jim Cardwell,” says the head of the National Association of Theater Owners John Fithian.
