The summer of super heroes kicked off this weekend as the first of multiple super hero epics hit theaters.
Thor opened with in the United States with a solid $66 million. The latest Marvel Studios epic rode a wave of good reviews and anticipation to the top spot. Many in Hollywood are looking to the super summer films to help kick Hollywood out of a down year at the box-office.
In second place was last week’s top film, Fast Five. The movie dropped 62% in earnings from last week to take in $32.5 million. That helped the movie cruise past the $100 million mark in its first ten days in theaters. Expect a sixth installment.
Third place went to newcomer Jumping the Broom with $13.7 million and fourth place went to the romantic comedy Something Borrowed with $13.1 million.
The animated comedy Rio rounded out the top five with $8.2 million.

Ben Ragunton says
I’m glad the movie did reasonably well. I’ve been very pleased with the Marvel movies since the first Iron Man, and even when after Avengers is released I can only hope that the studios will release more movies with this same level of quality!
