Director Matt Reeves is returning to the world of the undead.
The director behind last year’s Let Me In will direct the big-screen adaptation of The Passage. Based on the best-selling novel by Justin Cronin, the story finds a group of scientists thinking they’ve found the cure for cancer but instead unleashing the vampire apocalypse.
Fox 2000 will produce the project.
Reeves will supervise a rewrite of a script done by John Logan.
Many have compared The Passage to Stephen King’s The Stand in tone and style. King enthusiastically endorsed the novel when it was published last summer.

Uh, sounds oddly similar to I Am Legend…
@notme….its sounds exactly like the I am legend movie with Will Smith. As a stand alone movie it was interesting. Not a great movie by far. But I was offended they called it I am legend. That is my favorite book and the movie has nothing to do with the book. They are completely different stories. So alas, I still wait for a good and true movie adaptation of the book “I Am Legend”.
When I read The Passage, I didn’t even think of the comparison to I Am Legend for some reason. They seemed rather different in the characters and plotlines, but yes the overall idea is the same. I thought Justin Cronin took the story in some interesting directions, so I am looking forward to the next book and also to this movie adaptation.
Matt Reeves seems like a good choice based on the reviews I read for Let Me In. I didn’t see the Hollywood version though.
Having read the book, I can say the comparisons to I Am Legend (the movie version) are pretty superficial. And it’s really nothing at all like the book version of I Am Legend. I really liked the book and can’t wait for the movie to come out. Given the huge size of the book, however, I can see a lot being trimmed for the movie (unless they do it in two parts). For those who haven’t read the book, I highly recommend it. And I sincerely hope it’s not going to be in…….3D.
Oh, and let’s not forget, that was part of the plot line for Ultraviolet.
See, you guys mentioned Ultraviolet, and my first thought was of the British miniseries about vampires, not that meh movie.
Check out the miniseries, starred Steven Moyer and Idris Elba. Now there’s a series I wouldn’t mind seeing them make a second attempt at an American remake of, especially if they continued beyond the original 6 episodes.
LOL! It does sound a lot like I am Legend as well as Ultraviolet with a dash of Daybreakers. Well, if we can’t have a Zombie Apocalypse, then Vampires will have to do.
This description of the book is a bit misleading. There is a scientist who wants to cure cancer but the potential cure is immediately co-opted by the military who want to try and develop a group of super soldiers. And of course, that attempt goes horribly wrong and the super soldiers, who are in fact now vampires on steroids, escape. And these vampires are really pretty horrific. What follows is a vampire apocalypse, however that’s only the first 1/3 of the book. The rest of the book deals with the aftermath of that apocalypse and takes place about 100 years after mankind’s fall. Only small pockets of unaffected survivors remain by then and the rest of the book deals with one of those groups.
I was unaware of the British Ultraviolet series. I read about it on Amazon, and it sounds excellent! I will try to watch it before The Passage is released. Thanks!
@Summer…..another canadien show I found interesting was The Collector. It got 3 seasons but couldn’t really take off. The premise was good, one of the devils servants that has to collect the souls of people at the end of their 10 year deal with the devil decides he wants to try and earn redemption for their souls. The writing I think is what hurt the show the most. And the lead actor wasn’t right for it. Some episodes were so good and then others were just very weak. I think that show would be a good one to try an american reboot on.
