Many in Hollywood predicted a showdown this weekend between Rio and Scream 4. In the end, the bout wasn’t much of a fight as Rio posted more than twice as much as the latest Scream installment at the box-office.
The animated feature with the voices of Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg soared to the top of the box office with $40 million.
In second was Scream 4, which took in $19.3 million. That’s far below what the last two sequels took in on their opening weekends. Each took in more than $30 million.
Hop, the animated Easter comedy, took third place with $11.2 million. The Russell Brand cartoon has earned $82.6 million in three weeks.
The family film Soul Surfer was fourth with $7.4 million, followed by the action film Hanna with $7.3 million.
Ticket sales were up 17% over the same weekend last year.
