ScreenGems Picks Up U.S. Distribution Rights for Attack the Block

ScreenGems Picks Up U.S. Distribution Rights for Attack the Block

April 7, 2011 By Mike Hickerson Leave a Comment

attacktheblockThe British sci-fi film, Attack the Block will be coming to the United States. After winning rave reviews and critical praise at the recent South by Southwest film festival, there were some concerns about the film finding an American distributor due to its heavily accented dialogue and use of certain types of British slang.

As we reported on Slice of SciFi #308, there was some discussion of remaking the film for US audiences or distributing it with subtitles.

Thankfully, there will be no remake. ScreenGems announced this week they have picked up the U.S. distribution rights to the film. And according to the Hollywood Reporter, ScreenGems plans to distribute the film without subtitles.

“(Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions President) Steve Bersch screened this film for me and I fell completely in love with it. The film is, at once, charming, scary, funny, hip, clever and completely hits its mark. I hope this is the beginning of a long relationship with these incredibly talented filmmakers,” says ScreenGems president Clint Culpepper.

Block follows a gang of tough inner-city kids who rob a young woman as she is walking home in a scary South London tower block. She escapes when the gang is attacked by a small alien creature which falls from the sky. A second wave of creatures falls, this time bigger and more savage with the gang, who being hunted by the woman and the police, becomes the city’s unlikely heroes as the teen grab weapons, mount bikes, and set out to defend their turf.
