Paul Darrow, Lord Rathen in The Minister of Chance — A Slice of SciFi Interview

Paul Darrow, Lord Rathen in The Minister of Chance — A Slice of SciFi Interview

April 3, 2011 By Mike Hickerson Leave a Comment

studio22_bPaul Darrow is an icon of British science-fiction television.  He played the role of Avon for four season of Blake’s Seven and has also had a guest role in two Doctor Who serials.

Now, Darrow brings to life Lord Rathen in the new radiophonic series,  The Minister of Chance.   Using a combination of radio and film techniques, this new six part series is delivered by podcast.

Darrow took a few minutes to sit down and discuss his role in the new series with Slice of SciFi.

Slice of SciFi:  How did you become interested in The Minister of Chance?

Paul Darrow: As is often the case, the offer to appear in, The Miister of Chance, came out of the blue. The script was great – ditto other members of the cast – and the director has boundless enthusiasm and belief. So I was made an offer I couldn’t refuse!

Slice of SciFi:   Tell us a bit more about your role as Lord Rathen, please.

Paul Darrow: Well – he’s the bad guy. Except, like all bad guys, he doesn’t see anything wrong with his behaviour. Always interesting to play.

Slice of SciFi: What can we expect (without giving too much away, of course) to happen as the series unfolds? What kind of storyline will we see for your character?

Paul Darrow: Ah – your guess is as good as mine. I’ll have to see what Dan throws at me! But – so far so good – or bad!! (as in bad guy.)

Slice of SciFi: How is working on this series  different from other audio projects you’ve participated in?

Paul Darrow: Whilst, hopefully, we all behaved with decorum and professionalism… it was relaxed and fun. No pressure….

Slice of SciFi: What did you find most interesting about being involved in this series?

Paul Darrow: Now you’re getting technical! I just do what I’m told!

Slice of SciFi:  How does this experience compare to others like working on Blake’s Seven?

Paul Darrow: A tough question. You’ll have to let me think about that one!

Slice of SciFi:  Do you think it helps that Minister of Chance is appealing directly to its audience like Doctor Horrible’s Singalong Blog and several other similar projects have?

Paul Darrow: Well – it worked for Justin Bieber, didn’t it?

Slice of SciFi:  What’s the best way for fans to find the series and show their support?

Paul Darrow: I guess by down-loading the show. The more attention it gets…….well, I’m ready for the movie!

Slice of SciFi:  What other projects can we see you working on in the near future?

Paul Darrow: I have appeared – as a judge – in Law & Order UK a few times and am about to film another episode. Otherwise – I am “the voice” of JACK fm.

You can find The Minister of Chance HERE.  You can view a free prologue to the series and the first episode is now available for purchase and download
