Batman Franchise Will Be Rebooted

March 30, 2011 By Mike Hickerson 15 Comments

It’s worked before, so why not again?

Once The Dark Knight Rises wraps up, Warner Brothers says they plan to reboot the Batman franchise.

“We have the third Batman, but then we’ll have to reinvent Batman,” says WB executive Jeff Robinov. “Chris Nolan and [producing partner and wife] Emma Thomas will be producing it, so it will be a conversation with them about what the next phase is.”

Rebooting the franchise may be necessary so the Dark Knight can appear in the upcoming Justice League movie.

    Why?

The more I read the plans of Hollywood the less I care about Hollywood.

One question really… considering the longevity of the franchise without having to constantly “reboot” anything…Why?
Can’t there simply BE a Batman? Does anyone really need to know how or why?

Why not give it a rest after the next one? Oh, that’s right, never ending greed.

I would figure out a way to put this Batman (the dark knight one) into the JLA movie. Make him less of a JLA team player if you have too.

I thought I heard Bale was in for the upcoming Batman, then that was it. Probably the biggest reason they have to reboot.

Well, does “reboot” have to mean starting over with a new origin story?

I’ve always known this, but I guess this proves it: Hollywood is stupid. I thought rebooting “Spider-Man” was bad enough (I say wait at least ten years), but now they’re rebooting franchises THAT AREN’T EVEN DONE YET!

If they “reboot” to do something like “Kingdom Come” or “The return of the Dark Knight”(graphic Novel, might not be exact title name), I would be all for it.

    Ok. Comic book. 1960’s series, 1970’s cartoons, 1980’s Movie, 1990’s cartoon, 2000’s movie…

Why does this need another reboot? Apparently, because the will of the people is to have Batman available to watch… um…

“but then we’ll have to reinvent Batman”
HAVE TO? Is there some law requiring you to reinvent him after 3movies? Consider James Bond, he’s had dozens of movies. The guy just IS. Just make Batman movies without any connection to each other. Change actors as needed and move with the times. Don’t keep making serial trilogies.

Well, they reboot characters in comic books all the time don’t they? So I don’t see anything wrong with doing the same on the big screen. Nolan’ll be a hard act to follow though.

    @Barry

Not really. It happens occasionally mostly when an IP passes from one company to another. But these guys are saying that the only reason they’re rebooting is because they did 3 movies. It would be like rebooting a TV series each season.

I agree with Alverant. When the Batman movie franchise was first brought to light by Tim Burton we saw the role of Batman change twice, yet there was never a reboot until Christopher Nolan came along. The same thing can be said about the Superman movie series. Brandon Routh came in to place the park of Clark/Supes, yet Bryan Singer had the smarts to not treat it as a reboot, rather just make it a sequel to Superman II.

Even with the upcoming Avengers movie Ed Norton is out as Bruce Banner, yet they don’t see a need to reboot that specific film just to fit Avengers.

Just continue on with the series. It has worked for James Bond. It can work for this Batman franchise as well
