SyFy has given the green light to a second season of their reality series Face Off.
Here’s the details from the press release:
SYFY RENEWS HIT COMPETITION SERIES FACE OFF FOR A SECOND SEASON
Syfy announces that its breakout reality competition series Face Off will return for a second season of special effects competition, offering a new group of rising SFX make-up artists with the opportunity to showcase their imagination and creativity. The season one finale airs tonight, Wednesday, March 16 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT, in which the final contestants face off in a fairytale challenge that will conclude with one being named the winner of the premiere season.
Dwight D. Smith and Michael Agbabian of Mission Control will return as executive producers for the second season of Face Off. Casting for trained and self-taught special effects make-up artists begins this month. Interested applicants can go to www.Syfy.com/faceoff to download the online application form.
“With strikingly intense personalities and creatively stunning challenges, Face Off has ignited viewers’ imaginations, making it Syfy’s best unscripted franchise launch ever,” said Mark Stern, President of Original Content, Syfy, and Co-Head of Original Content, Universal Cable Productions. “We look forward to another exciting season showcasing some of the best special effects make-up talent in the country.”
In its premiere season, Face Off has earned critical acclaim and steady ratings in its first seven episodes, averaging a 1.1 HH Rating and 1.436 MM total viewers, including 900,000 P25-54 and 897,000 P18-49 viewers (note that this average includes 7-day DVR playback for episodes 1-5).
Face Off is a competition/elimination series exploring the world of special-effects make-up artists and the unlimited imagination that allows them to create amazing works of living art.

That’s fantastic but Caprica and Stargate Universe are still gone and the WWE remains, WTF?
Shadoglare says
Although I think it’s pretty sad that the best show SyFy currently has to offer is a reality show, it’s cool that they’re bringing it back.

I like to think of it more as a competition show, and since it directly relates to one of the elements that goes into creating the shows and movies most of us here love best, I applaud Syfy for running with the idea (or snapping it up if it was pitched to them), and for making the quick call on bringing it back for another season.
As for the Connor/Meghan/Jo thing, I think it was more Meghan and everyone else, with possibly Connor being oblivious at the start of it all. Seriously, she had the laugh of a groupie and the clingy tendency of an obsessive. How Meghan (and Frank) got on the show to begin with is a good question (there purely for drama?), but I have no problems with the top 4 finalists… their work won out.
Just about every season of Top Chef had extraneous drama, but in the end, it didn’t affect the outcome in the least… it was the skills of the people left standing at the end. Same thing seems to have happened with Face Off, so if a little bit of catfight brings a few more eyes to the show rather than to other reality shows that have zero redeeming value, I’m good with that.

Good news. We enjoyed this season except for the whole Jo/Meghan/Connor thing going on. I don’t mind these sorts of shows if they stay away from the interpersonal drama but it seems that all reality shows (expect maybe Dirty Jobs) feel compelled to have some conflict in them even if they don’t really need it.

I really don’t have a problem with this reality show as it stands. Actually fairly enjoyable. But to hijack this thread, SyFy has done little to “Imagine Greater” in terms of science fiction. Stargate Universe has become the next Firefly. Amazing to think that this show has been canceled! To make room for what? Cooking or makeup or wrestling?!? Really?!?
Jayson says
I shouldn’t get this angry over a TV show but damn it, I want SGU and Caprica back. Then I want all reality programming on The Sy-duh channel to die.
Mike says
Yep, make that another vote that Relaity-Fy should be ashamed. Wrestling and reality shows. What a joke of a station.
