“Voltron” Movie Bidding War

“Voltron” Movie Bidding War

March 10, 2011 By Mike Hickerson 6 Comments

The idea of bringing “Voltron” to the big-screen has captured the attention of several studios in Hollywood.

A bidding war has broken out to acquire the big-screen rights to the popular cartoon from the 1980’s.

Vulture reports producers Charles Roven (“The Dark Knight Rises”) and Richard Suckle had been working out a script with screenwriters Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer (himself responsible for the upcoming reboot of “Conan the Barbarian”).

Now it seems it’s only a matter of time before “Voltron” hits theaters, although it’s not likely to arrive before “Voltron Force,” a revamped cartoon, debuts on the Nicktoons channel this May.

According to World Events executive VP Robert Koplar, it’s likely the film will be ready to hit theaters by 2013 or by 2014 at the latest.

Whatever happened to the “G-Force” (Gatchaman) movie they were working on? I would rather see “Neon Genesis Evangelion” brought to the screen as a live action film. Weta was doing some work ups for the project and then it just fizzled.

I’ve been looking forward to a Voltron movie for years. I just hope they don’t let Michael Bay have anything to do with it. A Gatchaman movie would be nice as well.

Of all the years that Voltron was on, they told some fairly good stories and some nice action. I hope the movie maintains that balance and yes get a restraining order to keep Michael Bay away from it or really any movie.

Seriously? I just got done watching the freaking SMURFS live action trailer and now I have to hear about ANOTHER of my childhood amusements being raped by Hollywood! I still have my old Voltron Lions in their original (albeit heavily abused) box in the closet!

Now I understand why people go on killing sprees!

Ashe, If you want to bash the remake fine. Your opinion would carry more weight however if you waited until there was at least a trailer out. I was worried about the Star Trek reboot until I actually gave it a chance & I loved it. Also, while I understand fans’ anger at bad remakes, I don’t understand why it should change your feelings about what came before it. Hate it, fine, just don’t watch it.

A Go-Lion (aka Voltron) movie could be fun and interesting if done right. Unfortunately hollywood has a bad habit of taking properties like it (t-formers, Gi Joe, et al) and really messing with the things that made them great. I will reserve judgement, but am quietly hopeful that it might be good. Besides it couldn’t be worse then it’s Super Sentai offspring the Power Rangers.
