“Monopoly” Movie Still Happening

March 8, 2011 By Mike Hickerson 3 Comments

We haven’t heard much lately on the big-screen version on “Monopoly,”  leading some of us to hope that with Ridley Scott working on the new “Prometheus” that maybe the project had been shelved.

Apparently not.

“Monopoly is still happening, and we’re developing a great story,” said Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner to MTV News. “It’s a very fun take. Ridley is still the perfect creative steward, because he creates these great, fictionalized worlds. It’s going to be a very fun story to tell.”

The Monopoly board game involves players making money through the purchase of real estate, railroads, utilities, homes and hotels. Obviously, the movie plot will not directly be like playing the board game.

According to MTV News, the film will not really be tied-in with the world’s financial climate and will be “more of a timeless story.”

“It’s a very human personal story. It’s not really ‘Wall Street,’ not at all,” said Goldner. “It’s a fictionalized story of a family, and there’s a lot of intrigue in the story. Suffice it to say, it’s a story about a family with a history, and we’re projecting that into current times. But it’s not ‘Wall Street.’”

Hasbro plans for Scott to start production on the “Monopoly” board game movie for 2012 or 2013. Hasbro’s other board games to big screen currently under development include “Battleship,” “Ouija,” and “Candy Land.”

Hasbro (toy monopoly) decides it really wants to lose money on a film (Monopoly) which may only be a retelling of how they came to power in fantasy form.

I mean… Yea, Monopoly the movie!

(I welcome our future festive overlords)

Meanwhile the Ideal toy company is looking into making Movies from two of their classic games, Mouse Trap and KerPlunk!. Meanwhile Hasbro is considering adding a Scrabble movie to it’s film line up. Who are they kidding? 😉 I only have one title that should change their minds about ever considering making a game based movie: Super Mario Brothers.

BTW: did anyone enjoy Clue the Movie?
