Captain America Comic Book Prequel Will Include Nazis

March 1, 2011 By Mike Hickerson Leave a Comment

Many of us have been wondering if there will be Nazis in the upcoming production of “Captain America: The First Avenger.”

And while we may how big a role they’ll play (if any) in the movie, writer Fred Van Lente says they will be part of the comic book prequel, “Captain America: First Vengeance.”

“‘Captain America: First Vengeance’ is chock-full of Nazis, particularly once we start getting into Johann Schmidt’s origin in chapters 3 and 4,” he said in an interview with Newsarama. “They’re not downplayed. Schmidt runs an organization called Hydra, which starts as a part of the Third Reich power structure, and so therefore they are Nazis.”

Van Lente admits that he can understand where the confusion might be coming from, since there’s not an army of goose-stepping SS soldiers slinging bullets in the footage that’s been released so far, but that’s all because the story calls for a different breed of Third Reich villain.

“Many of the Nazis in ‘First Avenger’ wear Hydra uniforms,” he explained.

He stresses the point because he wants to make it clear the movie doesn’t attempt to alter world events beyond what is called for in Marvel’s fiction.

“It is not some kind of rewriting of world history,” Van Lente said. “There are Nazis in the movie, I’ve read the script. It is not trying to pretend that the Nazis didn’t exist, or that World War II didn’t happen the way we all know it from history.”
